Description

The Orangery or Gothick garden house, formerly listed as a Gothic summer house with Frampton Court, is a Grade I garden house built in the mid-18th century, possibly by William Halfpenny. It has been slightly altered in the late 20th century. The structure is made of ashlar stone on a plinth and features an embattled parapet with crocketed pinnacles, although the roof is not visible.

The design consists of two large octagonal sections that are two storeys high, connected by a single bay, with a smaller three-storey octagon at the back. This smaller octagon contains a spiral cantilevered stone staircase and a small cupola. There is a small late 20th-century extension at the rear that is not of special interest. A string course runs between the floors.

Each face of the building has sash windows with decorative octagonal glazing and moulded architraves featuring ogee arches, with some windows at the rear being blind. The central door has similar glazing and an enriched surround, flanked by small niches with crocketed pinnacles. Each window has moulded aprons.

Inside, the ground floor retains all original shutters, while fireplaces with decorative ogee surrounds have been moved from the first floor to the ground floor. The interior also features ogee panelled doors, a spiral hollow leaf moulded plaster cornice in one upstairs room, and a moulded stone staircase with a wrought iron balustrade. There have been slight alterations to the upper rooms. The building is set at the north end of a small canal.
