Description

Belvedere House is a former mill owner's house that dates back to the early 18th century and was enlarged and remodeled around 1789. At the time of the survey in September 1986, it was in the process of being converted into flats. The building is constructed of ashlar and coursed rubble limestone, featuring rebuilt ashlar chimneys and an artificial slate roof. It has a double pile plan and stands three stories tall with an attic.

The east front has a five-window arrangement, with 12-pane sash windows on the ground and middle floors and 9-pane sash windows on the upper floor, all set in plain openings. There is a central doorway with a round arched opening, topped by an Ionic portico porch that includes a dated tympanum. A string course runs at the head level of the ground floor windows, and there is a moulded modillion cornice with a plain parapet above. The hipped roof has been rebuilt and includes two 20th-century flush rooflights.

The west front is largely similar to the east but features a 20th-century altered doorway with a keyed round arched opening and cornice. On the north side, there is a central break-line in the masonry with a blocked earlier two-window fenestration to the left, which was recorded as being cross-windows. This side also has two doorways with stone lintels and a further range of windows to the right, with a parapet-mounted chimney on each side. The interior has been completely altered during the current work.
