Description
The Canal Round House is a Grade II listed canal lengthman's house built between 1790 and 1791 for the Thames and Severn Canal. It is constructed from coursed rubble limestone, which was formerly rendered, and features a rendered brick chimney and a concrete tile roof. The building is circular and consists of three storeys with an attic, along with a lean-to on the east side.
The house has a range of pointed arched windows with plain raised architraves and small paned timber casements on the east and west sides. The west side includes a square-headed doorway that used to serve as a stable entrance but now has a pair of glazed doors. On the north side, there is a pointed arched doorway at the upper floor level, which has a plank door and a coloured glass fanlight above it. Stone steps with decorative iron handrails lead up to this doorway. The building features plain bands at the upper floor and eaves levels, and there is an eaves-mounted chimney on the south side. The conical roof has a flush rooflight.
The interior has not been inspected. This house is one of several lengthman's houses of this type along the canal, with another identical example located at Cerney Wick in Latton, Wiltshire.
