Description

Wharf House and the adjacent workshop are a house with an attached warehouse, dating from the late 18th century. The building features coursed rubble limestone with smooth render on the front of the house, brick additions at the rear, brick chimneys, and a Welsh slate roof. It is two stories high with an attic and includes a two-story warehouse at the south end, along with two rear wings.

The west front has the house on the left, which displays a two-window layout. The ground floor has three-light chamfered mullioned casements beneath a continuous string course, while the upper floor features two-light casements and gabled attic dormers mounted in the eaves, all with iron casements. The central doorway is adorned with a Regency iron porch and a tent hood. The warehouse on the right has a central Venetian window and two eaves-level gabled dormers with deep two-light casements. There is a square-headed doorway to the left, which is accessed by a flight of stone steps.

The north gable end, made of brick, has a painted plaster advertisement that reads 'JAMES SMART/COAL STONE & SALT MERCHANT/BOATS & BARGES TO ALL PARTS/DEALER IN STAFFORDSHIRE.....'. The rear of the warehouse features two tall two-light mullioned casements and a central dormer with a two-light casement. The interior has not been inspected.
