Description
Chalford War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1920 by Omar Cottle of Chalford. It was repaired and restored in 1982. The memorial is made of local limestone and features a freestanding cross with a hooded Calvary on a conical shaft, set on a three-stepped square base. Above the carved figure of the crucified Christ is a carved open scroll inscribed with the text "INRI." The base below the Calvary displays the text "LEST/YE/FORGET" on the principal elevation facing London Road. The other faces of the base have applied metal plaques listing the names of those who fell in the First World War, along with an additional plaque on one of the steps. A plaque on a lower step commemorates those from the Second World War. On a step facing London Road, there is an inscribed text that has weathered significantly, which reads: "TO THE HONOUR OF THE SON OF GOD WHO WENT FOR THE SALVATION/OF THE WORLD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH AND/NEIGHBOURHOOD WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR THE CAUSE OF/RIGHT AND FREEDOM IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 TO 1919."
