Description

The north west part of Frogmarsh Mill is a former house that has been incorporated into the mill. It dates from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid 19th century. The building is constructed from random and coursed rubble limestone, with some areas rendered in a roughcast finish. The chimneys, originally made of ashlar, have been cut down, and the roof is covered with stone slates, although some corrugated roofing is present on the east side.

This two-storey building includes an attic and is attached to the north end of a long workshop range, which may have originally had a gabled design. On the west side, there are two gables, with the right gable adjoining a higher workshop range. Each gable features a two-light chamfered mullioned casement with hoodmoulds, and there are similar casements on the ground floor, some of which have been blocked. The upper floor has inserted workshop windows that are likely from the early 19th century. The continuation of the range to the right has segmental arched windows that are not of special interest.

At the north end, there is a central gable with a projecting chimney stack that has been cut down. To the left on the upper floor, there is a single-light recessed cavetto moulded casement with a hoodmould. Various lean-tos and outbuildings obscure the ground floor. On the east side, there are two gables, with the right gable featuring a three-light upper floor casement and two-light attic casements, both with hoodmoulds. The interior has not been inspected.

This part of Frogmarsh Mill was a cloth mill until the mid 19th century when it transitioned to pin manufacturing, and it is currently used as a tannery. The building is illustrated in works by W.G. Davie and E.G. Dawber from 1905, and J. Tann from 1967.
