Description
The Round House is a former teasel drying tower that has been converted into a small house. It dates from the mid to late 18th century, with a late 20th-century addition. The structure is built of coursed rubble limestone and features a stone slate roof. It is three storeys high and circular in shape, with a two-storey circular addition. There are three small lancet windows positioned at the cardinal points, and a pointed arched doorway at the upper level on the rear, which is now accessed by modern stairs. The lancets were removed where the addition connects but have been reused on that structure. A fixed light has been inserted at a low level on the original tower, and there are some timber casements on the addition. The roofs are conical, with the addition topped by a finial. The interior has not been inspected. This building is an important survival from a time when dry teasels were used to raise the nap of cloth.
