Description
This is a block of buildings situated on a street corner, originally partly 18th century but largely rebuilt in the 19th century. The construction uses random rubble limestone, with some areas finished with smooth render and a painted ashlar front to the F.W. Wall and Sons section. The building has ashlar chimneys and a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high with an attic.
The front elevation has a mix of sash windows; a 12-pane sash window with a Regency reeded architrave is on the ground floor of the corner house. A doorway has a 20th-century panelled door and plain fanlight. There are two gabled dormers with timber casements in the roof. The F.W. Wall and Sons section has a two-storey canted bay window, with three 12-pane sashes on the upper floor, alongside 20th-century shop windows on the ground floor. A sill band, moulded cornice, and blocking course are also present. An angled 12-pane sash window is positioned where a door once stood on the corner. The west side, facing Well Hill, shows evidence of several blocked windows. The fenestration is largely three windows wide with mostly 4-pane sashes, two of which are on the ground floor with Regency architraves. A central doorway has a 20th-century door, and two gabled attic dormers are present. The interior remains uninspected. The building was recorded as the Salutation Inn from 1775. It occupies an important position on the street corner.
