Description

Road Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is primarily timber-framed, with some brick rebuilding, and features a limestone ashlar chimney and a thatched roof. The building has a lobby entry and is two storeys high with an attic, along with a single-storey cross wing that creates a T-shaped plan.

The front of the farmhouse shows the gabled end of the 16th-century wing projecting to the left, characterized by close studding with a middle rail and quadrant bracing in the gable. It has a single-window arrangement with a casement in the attic and a 20th-century glazed doorway below, which is sheltered by a tiled hood. The main range to the right displays small framing on a limestone plinth, featuring a central brick porch with a thatched gabled roof and a round arch. The windows are mainly small-paned timber casements, and there is a ridge-mounted chimney with a moulded cap and skirt, along with scalloped decoration along the thatched ridge.

On the north end, the side of the cross wing has early square framing around an altered doorway opening and three small framed-up casements, with a brick lean-to projecting to the left. The back of the building shows that the cross wing to the right is half-hipped and has been extended with a single-storey room from the early 20th century, along with a 20th-century lean-to in the angle. The rear of the main range is small-framed with scattered timber casements. The south gabled end has been rebuilt in brick and features single-window fenestration on the ground floor and a louvred vent in the attic. The cross wing is said to have been a former open hall.
