Description

No. 13 Market Street is a dwelling that was formerly also a shop, dating from the 16th century or earlier. The building features rough rendering on a timber frame, with part of the frame visible in one gable and one section of exposed framing on the left. It has stone slate roofs and displays one large and one small gable that project from the ridge roof. There is a stone stack on the left, positioned right of the through entry, and a second brick stack. The premises are L-shaped with a deep projection to the right at the back. The main gable is set back from the gables on either side.

The building has three storeys and two windows on the front. The right gable features a small two-light casement, while the left has a three-light casement with leaded lights beneath a stone slate roof and a projecting wood cill. The first floor of the main gable has a doubled two-light casement. There is a good six-panel door in a broad frame on the left, and a recent two-windowed unit under a moulded fascia on the ground floor, which projects forward to align with the lesser gable.

Inside, the building retains much original timber work in the roof and floors, with solid oak treads leading up a broad newel stair. The bottom newel is round, while the upper level features a hexagonal newel that is eccentric to the one below. There is a very thin framed wall to the top gable, measuring about 4 inches. A large fireplace, located to the left of the through-way, is reputed to have been blocked in 1936, but the stone moulded mantel is still visible in two separate rooms. One room at the back includes 18th-century window shutters.
