Description

The Swan Hotel is an 18th-century hotel, with a 19th-century brick return wing. It has a smooth rendered exterior, topped by a stone slate roof. The main frontage is broad, with an off-centre doorway and a former carriage way. It has two storeys and five windows, featuring sash windows with glazing bars set within painted plat-band surrounds. A wide, elliptical-headed doorway is framed by moulded responds and caps, and a deep roll mould to the arch. A three-storey pavilion returns to the right, with a hipped roof and two windows on each floor, also with sash windows and glazing bars; a new window is present on the ground floor. A second wide, elliptical opening is located to the left and is part of a pastiche reconstruction which is characteristic of this part of Market Street.
