Description
The Pigeon House at Painswick House is a mid-18th century structure made of limestone ashlar with a timber top storey and a lead cupola. This impressive classical building features a square rusticated base that transitions to an octagonal upper level, topped with a hexagonal louvred crown and cupola. At ground level, there are deep recessed alcoves with segmental heads on each of the four cardinal faces, supported by deep voussoirs beneath a plain string course. Above these alcoves, the building has eight tall arched openings with rusticated quoins and voussoirs, and louvred ventilators above with paired openings and arches. The ground floor has a very low pitched cross vault. The windows on the first floor are generally blocked. The recess on the ground floor facing the house appears to have once had a portico or canopy, and there is a narrow door providing access to a stair. The interior is not accessible.
