Description
Nos 3 and 4 Gyde Almshouses are part of a group of ten almshouses built in 1913 by Sidney Barnsley under the will of Edwin Gyde. They are constructed from dressed squared limestone and feature a concrete tile roof. The buildings are arranged in an L-plan, with each house having a full-height front gable. No 4 includes a slightly lower original extension on the right and twin gables at the back facing Gyde Road.
The almshouses are 1½ storeys tall and have 2 or 3-light chamfer-mullion casements with stopped drips at the ground floor, though they lack leading. The original plank doors are well-preserved, with the door to No 3 located far left and the door to No 4 situated in the internal corner, both framed by slightly cambered deep-chamfered surrounds. At the back of No 3, there is a large external stack with offsets, and two ridge stacks are present on the return block. A late 20th-century gabled porch has been added to the right return of No 4.
The rear of the buildings features various small style light casements in a double gabled front. The interior of No 3 retains original doors and has chamfered and stopped beams. These almshouses represent one of five pairs designed in slightly varied styles, showcasing the best of Cotswold architectural tradition.
