Description
Nos 9 and 10 Gyde Almshouses are a pair of almshouses built in 1913 by Sidney Barnsley, following the will of Edwin Gyde. They are part of a group of ten almshouses and are constructed from dressed squared limestone with a concrete tile roof. Unlike the other almshouses in the group, these have only one front-facing gable, which is positioned to the left and stops across the slope, although the roof ridge remains continuous.
The buildings are one and a half storeys high and feature two ground floor windows: No 9 has a two over three-light chamfered mullion casement with a stopped hood, while No 10 has a three-light similar window, with a 20th-century two-light dormer window above. There are original plank doors on the left and right, set in deep chamfered surrounds, and a further gable end door for No 9, which is flanked by a two-light and a one-light casement window, all under a two-light casement. The roof has two ridge stacks, and there are small openings on the twin-gabled front facing Gyde Road. This pair is one of five pairs in slightly varied designs, showcasing the best Cotswold architectural tradition.
