Description

A detached barn, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, is located on the west side of Cheltenham Road in Painswick. Constructed of good cut and squared limestone with a concrete tile roof, the barn features a large beam set gable facing the road and sloping into the land. A central, deep projecting mid-strey is present, with a loft above. A series of ventilation slits are arranged in a diamond pattern within the long walls and gables. To the right of the mid-strey on the south side is a plank door with a segmental head, set beneath a two-light flush chamfered mullion casement. Similar casements are also found in the road gable, and a ridge stack is present. A deep cart entry has a steel lintel over corrugated iron doors; further doors are set to a wood lintel and flush to the wall, and a segmental-headed door is located at the road end.

The interior comprises seven bays, including an enlarged mid-strey bay. A full-height stone wall divides the space, followed by two further bays situated within a two-storey section. The trusses are a combination of heavy tile beam and collar types, and collar trusses with cruck-like arch braces, supported by three rows of thin purlins. A concrete floor is in place. A loading square opening is present in the far gable. The barn occupies a prominent position at the entrance to the town from the north and retains its original character. It is grouped with Washwell House opposite.
