Description
Ludloes House dates back to the 17th century and has undergone significant alterations and extensions in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed and squared limestone with a stone slate roof. It comprises a main block with an earlier hipped parallel block behind, and a narrow gabled wing set forward at right angles to the right.
The main block is two storeys and has an attic, featuring two windows. It has three-light recessed chamfer mullion casements to the ground floor, each with a stopped hood, while the first floor has two-light windows. A 20th-century hipped dormer window is also present, all windows incorporating leading. A door is located to the right, set within a recess. The rear elevation features a two-window central section with a flush full gable to the right, containing a first-floor segmental-headed wooden window. Other rear windows are stone-mullioned casements. To the extreme left is a small gable with a stack adjoining a set-back portion. The right-hand wing has a two-light chamfer mullion casement facing south, alongside various casements on the ground floor, and two flush gabled half dormers with two-light leaded casements. The street-facing gable is plain.
The name "Ludloes" may relate to the fact that one of the Painswick Mills was formerly Ludlowes Mill.
