Description
Nos 5 and 6 Gyde Almshouses are a pair of almshouses built in 1913 by Sidney Barnsley, following the will of Edwin Gyde. They are constructed from dressed squared limestone and feature a concrete tile roof. The buildings have a symmetrical design with two gables at both the front and back, and they are one and a half storeys high. Each house has two sets of three-light chamfered-mullion casements on the ground floor, which are positioned beneath a continuous stopped drip.
The original plank doors are located on the left and right sides, framed by slightly cambered deep chamfered surrounds. At each gable end, there is an additional door set within late 20th-century gabled porches, which have small original lights flanking them and are topped by a two-light casement. The rear side facing the road features various small single lights. The buildings have a central ridge stack and rear gable stacks. This pair is one of five pairs of almshouses in slightly varied designs, all reflecting the best Cotswold architectural tradition.
