Description

PAINSWICK GLOUCESTER ROAD SO 8610/8710 (east side)

6/87 Garden pavilion to the Gyde Almshouses II Garden pavilion or store. Dated 1913, probably by Sidney Barnsley. Small square pavilion set into roadside embankment, crowned by pyramidal roof and approached from road by steps. Coursed and squared limestone, stone slate roof. At upper level 3 faces have 2-light flush-chamfer mullion casements with plain glass, the east front with a deep-set plank door. To the road at lower level a recessed panel with moulded edge inscribed: 'THE GYDE ALMSHOUSES. These almshouses were endowed and built by Edwin Francis Gyde, 1913'. A simple gate gives to an enclosing set of steps in square-edged stonework, with three quarter-landings, contained within embanking dry stone walls. A characteristically careful detail accompanying the group of 10 almshouses (qq.v).
