Description

The Stables at Painswick House are a stable block, likely dating to the late 17th century, with modifications in the 20th century. Originally built for an earlier house on the site, the structure has now been completely converted for domestic use. The building is constructed of fire coursed and squared limestone, with a stone slate roof to the front and concrete tiles to the back. It has an H-shaped plan, displaying symmetrical hipped wings. A continuous lean-to extension was added in the 20th century at the rear.

The stables are one storey with an attic, featuring a 2:2:2 window arrangement. The windows are plain chamfered cross-mullioned casements, and the central section has plain glazed doors set within a flat, three-centred arch, surmounted by a flat pediment that incorporates a round oculus and a ball finial. The right return side contains two blocked three-centred arch openings, now filled with 20th-century windows. On the front returns of the wings are pairs of glazed doors within three-centred arches. Two laylights are present on each of the front and back roof slopes, and a 20th-century dormer has been added to the rear.
