Description

The White House is a dwelling, believed to have been an inn at some point, dating from the 17th century and later. It features painted rubble and some squared marlstone block in the southeast gable facing the A38. The building has an L-plan with a return wing at the back on the north side and a stack located one bay in from the gable to the road. The southwest facade is two storeys high with irregularly spaced two or three-light casements beneath wooden lintels. The gable facing the road includes a three-light casement under a wooden lintel with the remains of a stone drip, along with a two-light casement that has some leading. The return gable on the north side has a wide plank door leading to the cellar, which is topped by a wooden lintel and flanked by two small two-light casements. There is evidence that this part of the building was raised, indicated by the brickwork. The entrance is through a 20th-century door located in the re-entrant angle beneath a modern lean-to open verandah.

Inside, there is a large open fire with the inscription 'W.H. 1770' scratched on the bressumer. A timber-framed partition is located opposite the fireplace, and the staircase was previously situated to the right of this fireplace, which was likely originally positioned at the external gable wall. The existing two-storey unit facing the A38 is a later addition. Stone steps lead down to the cellar in the return wing.

At the time of the survey, the property was part of the Berkeley Estate and is situated on an embankment beside the A38, making it prominent when approached from the south.
