Description

The presbytery adjoining the Roman Catholic Church of St Peter is a Roman Catholic building dating from around 1880. It is constructed from squared stone with ashlar details and features an end-gabled slate roof with gabled dormers and brick stacks. This double-depth block is located on the west side of the church.

The exterior is two storeys high, with an attic and cellar, showcasing an imposing asymmetrical front in a Gothic Revival domestic style. The front has four bays. On the ground floor, to the left, there is a recessed porch framed by nook shafts with moulded bases and capitals, featuring a segmental-arched head with roll moulding. Inside the porch, stone steps lead to a panelled door. To the right of the porch, in the second and fourth bays, are two-light windows with segmental-arched heads, upper transoms, and trefoiled heads in the upper lights. In the third bay, between the two-light windows, is a small single-light window. A continuous moulded string course runs across the front, raised as a hoodmould above each arch. At an intermediate level in the third bay, there is a two-light window with cusped tracery in the head and a hoodmould with carved stops, which lights the stairwell.

On the first floor, each of the first, second, and fourth bays features a two-light window with a shallow segmental-arched head and arched lights, each light having a casement. The attic is lit by two dormers with coped gables and shaped kneelers above the first, second, and third bays. The larger dormer above the second bay has a two-light, mullioned window, while the smaller dormer above the third bay has a single-light window, all with casements. The roof ends have coped gables with shaped kneelers crowned by gablets. The presbytery makes a significant contribution to the overall design of the Church of St Peter.
