Description

Northend Vaults is a merchant's house that has been converted into a public house. It likely dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with a refronting that occurred in the mid to late 18th century, along with 19th and 20th century alterations. The building features a timber frame, brick construction, and roughcast on the front, topped with a slate roof and brick stacks. It has a double-depth layout with parallel pitched roofs and a pair of steeply pitched cross gables at the rear.

The exterior showcases three storeys at the front and two storeys with an attic at the rear, along with a cellar beneath the front range. The street-facing side has 20th-century doors and windows for the public house bars on the ground floor. The upper floors are adorned with chamfered quoins at either end and a crowning cornice with closely set modillions. Each upper floor features three identical mid-19th century sash windows in timber frames that are flush with the wall face and include central vertical glazing bars. A rainwater pipe on the left has an 18th-century lead rainwater head.

Inside, there is a mid-18th century open well staircase that runs from the first floor to the attic, featuring a solid string, column newels, column-on-vase balusters, and a ramped handrail. The first-floor front rooms have bridging beams with ogee stopped chamfers, while the rear rooms on the upper floors have bridging beams with stopped chamfers as well. In the rear wing on the first floor, there are also bridging beams with stopped chamfers. Although the roof is not accessible, a photograph on the premises shows substantial original timbers.
