Description
No. 62 Northgate Street is a merchant's house that has been converted into a shop and was formerly a dwelling. It likely dates from the 15th century, with significant alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. The building features an encapsulated timber frame, brick construction, and a slate roof with a central offset in the lateral ridge, along with flat-roofed dormers. The front block has a later extension at the rear.
The exterior is single storey with an attic. The ground floor has a late 20th-century shop front, with a plain brick wall painted white above the eaves level. There are two roof dormers, one on the left and one on the right of the center, each containing double casements.
Inside, during repairs in 1993, original timber framing was uncovered in the north and south gable-end walls and the lateral walls of the front block. This framing includes parts of storey posts, beams from the original lower first-floor level, and diagonal struts. Additionally, portions of a central open truss were found, which include a principal rafter, a collar tie clasping a purlin, and a mortice for a wind brace, all suggesting the existence of a former first-floor chamber.
