Description

Nos. 83 and 85 Northgate Street, along with No. 1 Worcester Street, form a terrace of three shops and former dwellings located at the west corner with Worcester Street. This development dates from the early 19th century, following the creation of Worcester Street. The buildings are constructed of stuccoed brick painted white, with stone details painted black, and feature a slate roof and brick stacks.

The exterior consists of three storeys and has a total of four windows across the front. The ground floor showcases late 19th-century shop fronts, with the entrance to No. 85 set at an angle below the corner. There is a second entrance to No. 85 on Worcester Street, which retains its original fanlight with margin panes. A stone string runs along the first-floor sill level, topped by a frieze band and cornice with a blocking course.

The window openings on the upper floors are of similar size and are framed with moulded stone architrave surrounds. The first-floor windows have moulded stone end brackets beneath the sill band, while the second-floor windows feature projecting stone sills. In No. 83 Northgate Street, the windows are late 19th-century plain horned sashes, while Nos. 85 and 1 Worcester Street have sashes with glazing bars (three panes by four panes), except for two lower half sashes on the first floor of No. 85, which have been replaced with plain versions. Notably, the windows in the second bay from the left in Worcester Street are blank on both upper floors. The interior has not been inspected.
