Description
No. 8 Hare Lane is a merchant's house that has been converted into a shop and restaurant. It dates from the early 16th century and has undergone later alterations. The building features a timber frame and brick construction with a tiled roof and a brick stack on the left side. It has a right-angle shape with a broad plan, and the rear wing on the left may have originally served as the hall, which was connected to former chambers in the front range above the shop. Access to the shop and rear yard is on the right side.
The exterior consists of three storeys and a cellar. The front displays jettied upper floors that are underbuilt on the ground floor with 18th-century red brick laid in header courses, which has been painted white in the 20th century. The upper storeys are timber-framed, featuring two bays that jet out at the first and second-floor levels. The bressumers are supported by exposed ends of cross beams and joists, although the former knee braces below the beam ends were removed in the 20th century. The close studding is visible on both upper floors. The ground floor has 20th-century windows in timber frames, while the first and second floors each have two early 19th-century three-light casements with glazing bars set in openings with original sill rails. Inside, there is some evidence of timber-framing on the upper floors.
