Description
A terrace of ten houses built between 1823 and 1825, with later alterations including the conversion of number 2 into a shop and dwelling in the late 19th century. The terrace was part of the development of Oxford Street for John Bowyer, who was an attorney. The houses are constructed of brick, with a stucco finish, and have slate roofs and brick stacks on the party walls. They are arranged as double-depth blocks with wings to the rear.
The houses are three storeys high, with cellars, and numbers 18 and 20 are at a lower level. They feature offset plinths and continuous first-floor and second-floor bands to numbers 2, 4, 6, and 8, with a first-floor band to numbers 18 and 20. Originally, there was a continuous crowning frieze band and moulded cornice, but this has been removed from numbers 4, 6, 8, and 12. A parapet with capping remains above.
The ground floor doorways are set to the left of each house, featuring deep jambs, stone steps leading to the threshold, and plain rectangular fanlights. A sash window with 4x4 panes is on the right; number 2 has been replaced with a shop front, while numbers 4, 8, and 10 have later sash windows. The first floor of each house has two tall sash windows, and the second floor has two shorter sashes, all originally with glazing bars (first-floor sashes with 3x4 panes, second-floor sashes with 3x3 panes). The second floor of number 2 now has 20th-century metal framed windows. The interior was not inspected.
