Description
The monument to Matthew Williams and his family is located in the churchyard, about 1 metre southeast of the south window in the chancel of the Church of St Mary. This early 19th-century chest tomb is made of sandstone and features a flat top with a square edge. At the time of the survey in September 1983, the monument was largely overgrown with ivy. It is set on a large platform that was formerly surrounded by railings. The ledged slab bears an inscription commemorating Matthew Williams of Morton, Surrey, who died in 1846, as well as his wife Mary, who died in 1837, and their daughter Mary Ann, who died in 1832 at the age of 4 years and 6 months.
