Description
The gate piers and quadrant walls at the entrance to St John's on the Hill were built in the early 19th century and are made of sandstone and limestone. The structure features a pair of piers that are approximately 700 millimeters square and about 4 meters high, topped with large ball finials on square ogee finials, along with moulded capping and V-joint rusticated shafts at the base. Each side wall has quadrants made of squared and coursed limestone with flat sandstone capping, which sweep towards the square piers at the roadside. These piers are also around 700 millimeters square and project about 75 millimeters from the wall face. The overall width to the outer piers is approximately 13 meters, with the upper (left) pier standing about 1.75 meters high and the lower pier about 2.75 meters high. At the time of the survey in December 1983, no gates were present.
