Description

Ghyll House Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from 1913. The date '1913 MAL (Lamb)' is inscribed on a stone set beneath a window on the south side. It is constructed of coursed and snecked rock-faced sandstone with drafted margins at the quoins, and has a Welsh slate roof with copper. The building is octagonal, featuring a recessed verandah entrance between projecting two-storey square bays. These bays have haunched pediments to the north and east, and a porch projection to the rear. The farmhouse has deep eaves and stacks at the internal angles. The square bays incorporate stone mullions in a 1:3:1-light arrangement with leading, while other windows are wood casements with bars. A large stair window is divided into three lights by three mullions, and features leading. The original panelled entrance doors have original glazing under a transom light with leading, and the verandah front is three-arched with a timber-framed bay above. The interior is largely as built, featuring fine joinery including panelled doors, an octagonal well stair with square newels, acorn finials, and turned balusters, opening directly from a central octagonal hall with skylight. There are two carved wood fireplaces in a provincial design, one with fluted pilasters and the other with two lion supporters to arms bearing a motto. The property represents an unusually complete example of work from the immediate pre-war period, exhibiting particularly fine interior fittings and an unusual form for a farmhouse. During the First World War, the building is said to have been used as a hospital.
