Description

The Robinson monument and railing is located in the churchyard about 1.5 meters south of the south-west corner of the south porch of the Church of St. Ethelbert. This Grade II listed structure is a pedestal tomb dedicated to John Robinson, who died in 1784, made of stone and wrought iron.

The monument is square with bowed ends on the north and south sides. It features a flat lid with a moulded edge and an upstand that slopes up to a steep pyramid top, crowned by an acorn in a fluted cup. The ends have a frieze decorated with leaf motifs, and a panel below is defined by a sinking with a shaped head and base. The sides display dressed heads with swags that define the head of the panel for the lettering. The entire structure rests on a plinth, and the first inscription starts in italic lettering and ends in a normal style, with the lettering blacked in.

Surrounding the monument is a square railing, with bars held by top and bottom rails that are not set into the stone, featuring spearhead designs. The larger corner bars have shaped tops and bases. The inscriptions on the monument date up to 1870. This monument is one of three Robinson memorials that form a group.
