Description
The Robinson Monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 3 meters southwest of the south porch of the Church of St. Ethelbert. It commemorates Phillip Robinson, who died in 1712, and features inscriptions carved on a flat lid with leaf decoration around the edges. The lid has a wide projecting moulded edge. The long sides of the tomb are designed with a single fielded panel, while the north side has additional tooling that divides the panel into a wide center and narrow sides. The ends of the tomb are square panels with tooled margins, and inside, there are two mouldings with scrolled ends that create rounded corners for the panel. Consoles act as buttresses on the outside of the main body, adorned with leaf carvings on the sides and ends. The monument commemorates Phillip Robinson and his son, with later inscriptions added, the last of which dates to 1767. The earliest lettering is simple with slight serifs, while the later inscriptions feature copperplate flourishes in the last line. This monument is one of three Robinson memorials that form a group.
