Description
The monument to the Morfe family is a mid-18th century pedestal tomb located about 6 metres north of the north wall of the nave in the churchyard of St Mary. It is made of sandstone and features a 'tent' top with a moulded edge, reserved corners, bolstered ends, flat side panels, and a moulded base. The north side of the monument displays the date 1763, while the south side commemorates Richard and Sarah Morfe's children: a son who died on 21 July 1785 at the age of 11 days, a daughter named Ann who died in 1787 at the age of 1 year and 11 months, and their son George who died in 1793 at the age of 5 years. This inscription provides insight into the high rates of infant mortality during the 18th century. The monument is situated approximately 3.5 metres north-east of the church porch.
