Description

ST BRIAVELS STOWE HILL SO 50 NE (north side) 2/184 Stowe Court 3.2.88 GV II Large detached dwelling. C17, C18 and C19. Rendered and ashlared, stone slate, double Roman tile, and concrete slate roofs. An L-plan, probably built in two sections, the inner-facing roof slopes with stone slates, and the outer slopes with replacement materials. Wing facing road is 1 storeys, 3 + 1-windowed: three 2- light C19 casements with ogee heads to lights in stopped drips to flush gables, over two 12-pane sashes with voussoir heads, central pair C20 glazed doors, and, far right, another 12-pane sash. Return wing, right, 2 storeys, 2-windowed, 12- pane sashes over small 2-light C19 casements, all with voussoirs and stone cills, and far right a plank door. Two gable and one ridge stacks brought to ridge level and completed with paired diagonal flues in sandstone, but in brick on wing, right. Interior has been considerably modified, includes stick baluster stair, some C19 shutters, a section of timber-framed walling near the junction between wings, heavy beams, and in the upper floor, left, evidence for a spiral stair recess. At right hand end of right wing adjoining the doorway is a stone water tank c 2 m x 2.5 m x 1.25 m, apparently cut from a single sandstone block.
