Description
Stowe Grange is a farmhouse that dates back to the 16th century, with some 19th-century alterations. The building has a rough rendered exterior and is topped with a Welsh slate roof. It features a centrally located stair turret at the back and a two-storey porch at the front. There are two large external gable stacks, each with paired diagonal terminal shafts made of brick.
To the front left of the farmhouse, there is a later two-storey cottage that is set gable to the road. The main block of the farmhouse is three storeys high and includes a part cellar. It has a three-windowed facade, although the first bay is blocked by the adjacent cottage. The central section features a three-light casement window above a 19th-century plank door, while to the right are four-light casements and a segmental headed doorway. The windows are set under crude drips and stop-chamfered detailing. To the left of the porch, there is a 4-centred door opening with a moulded surround.
At the back, the farmhouse has four-light wooden 19th-century casements on two storeys, flanking the stair turret, which has a two-light casement and a 20th-century door. The cottage has a two-storey, three-windowed front with 19th-century two-light casements above one five-light and one two-light window with a transom, and an off-centre left four-panel 19th-century door.
Inside, the farmhouse features many very heavy chamfered beams and a robust roof structure. The cellar contains enormous beams and stopped-chamfer joists. There are deep bressummer fireplaces on the ground and first floors at the right-hand end, and an oak tight well stair. The farmhouse is reputed to have been built in 1563, which is plausible given the heavy and relatively crude detailing found in some areas.
