Description

Knoll Hill House is a large detached house dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of brick with dressed stone quoins, and has a stone slate roof with an ashlar stack. The building has a flattened "T"-shaped plan, with a 19th-century extension at the right gable end and another 19th-century extension at the left gable end. It is two storeys high, with an attic, and has a facade divided into a 1:4:1 window arrangement, with forward-facing gables at both ends. The right-hand gable is from the 19th century and has a single-storey lean-to to its right. A single-storey extension also projects from the left gable end. The windows are twelve-pane sashes set within dressed limestone architraves with keystones. Two smaller, similar windows, formerly lighting the attics of the forward-facing gables, are now blocked. A canted bay window is on the ground floor of the left-hand gable, and a rectangular bay window is on the right-hand gable. A gabled 19th-century porch with a glass door featuring glazing bars is located centrally to the right of the front facade. A circular window with decorative glazing is set within a dressed limestone surround with four keystones above. Two hipped roof dormers light the attic space. At the rear, a projecting gable features two and four-light stone-mullioned casements, potentially dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, with two having stopped hoods. A 19th-century porch is located to the right. A fine 19th-century lead flower trough with a vine scroll motif in relief, and a water pump dated and initialled 'R.S. 1851', are situated along the rear wall to the right of the porch; both were brought to this location in the late 20th century. The interior has not been inspected.
