Description

The Hayes is a large detached house, dating from the early 19th century with possible extensions in the mid-to-late 19th century. An archway forming the entrance to a former stableyard is dated 1840. Built of ashlar, the house has a stone slate roof and ashlar stacks; part of a former stableblock has been reroofed in concrete tile. The building has a roughly rectangular plan, possibly with a later extension at the rear. The main body of the house is linked by a wall and archway to the stableblock at the rear.

The front of the house has two storeys and an attic, with a three-bay entrance facade. A gable on the left-hand side projects, supported by moulded stone corbels at eaves level, and features a castellated oriel window illuminating the gable. Stone-mullioned cross windows with stopped hoods are found on the first floor. The right-hand bay projects slightly, featuring a large, castellated bay window on the ground floor. A gabled projecting porch, approached by a flight of five steps, leads to a Tudor-arched entrance with a heraldic shield above. The porch contains part-glazed double doors. The garden front is twin-gabled, with five bays, and features saddleback gable end coping, moulded kneelers and wooden guttering. Octagonal stacks are also present.

To the left of the entrance front is a large, castellated, Tudor-arched archway dated 1840, linking the house to the former stableblock/store via a wall pierced with lancet-shaped openings. The cross-gabled stableblock/store has a bellcote and flat coping at the gable end towards the house. The house was formerly the residence of the Baghot-De la Bere family.
