Description

Windmill Cottage is a detached house that likely has origins in the 16th century but has been significantly modified over time, including 20th-century extensions. The building features some square paned braced timber-framing with rendered panels on the front wall, a brick gable wall to the right of the early block, and rendered brick on the extensions and gables. The roof is plain tile, with a mix of clay and concrete tiles, and there is a small brick stack.

The original cottage has a narrow depth cross passage in the center bays with an external stack to the left, which is not included within the large extension on that side. To the right, there is a set-back two-storey extension and some flat-roofed extensions at the rear. The house has one storey and an attic, comprising five bays. The front elevation includes one three-light and three two-light casement gabled dormers above four two-light casements. On the far left, there is a pair of glazed doors, and to the off-centre right, a glazed door is situated under a 20th-century glazed pent porch. The set-back portion has two-light casements, while the back features a large swept-down roof with 20th-century casements.

Inside, the cottage retains one pair of heavy crucks supporting the diagonal ridge and a heavy framed wall to the left of the cross passage. The fireplaces have been replaced, but there is a bread oven with a cast iron door located in the end room to the left, connected to the external stack.
