Description

43-44 Netherton is a pair of cottages that were originally one building, likely constructed in the late 17th century and later enlarged into two separate cottages in the early 19th century. The cottages are built from random coursed rubble stone and feature a stone slate roof, with two stone ridge stacks and one end stack located at the far left.

The structure is a single range, comprising a single storey and an attic. No 43 retains its original cottage features, including a small attic gable on the left and a former end stack on the right, which is accompanied by a newel stair lit by a small single light. The central entrance consists of a boarded door set in a plain wood surround, leading to a projecting gabled porch that was likely added during the extension for No 44. Inside, the main room is complemented by an additional small room to the left, which has a two-light wood casement window with a timber lintel and slate sill, similar to the attic gable above.

No 44 was carefully enlarged in the same style, featuring an attic gable on the right, two two-light wood casement windows on the ground floor, and a similar porch on the left-hand side. The door for this porch is positioned at the front rather than flush with the wall. Both attic gables and the porch gables are designed with exposed triangular timber frames. Additionally, there is a small single-storey wing on the left of No 43, which includes a two-light wood casement window and an end stone stack.
