Description
Pope's Seat is an early 18th-century landscape building located in Cirencester Park. It is constructed from limestone ashlar with vermiculated rustication on the front, while the sides and rear are made of coursed squared limestone. The building features a stone slate roof and is designed as a small pavilion with a distyle Doric portico in antis, flanked by screens with clasping pilasters. The central opening is surrounded by pilasters with bands of vermiculated rustication, supporting a full entablature and an open pediment. The pediment is infilled with vermiculated voussoirs and has the incised lettering "POPE'S SEAT" in the tympanum. The flanking screens also display bands of vermiculated rustication, chamfered coping, and round-headed niches with keystones. The clasping pilasters are adorned with similar bands of rustication and ball finials. Inside, the walls are roughcast, and the floor is made of limestone sett, with a round-headed opening at the rear.
