Description

The stone pier located at NGR SP 0060 0223 is a former gate pier, dating from the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features vermiculated rustication. The pier stands approximately 3 meters high and includes a moulded stone plinth, alternating bands of ashlar and vermiculated rustication, a moulded stone cornice, and a two-tier cap topped with a ball finial and a band of vermiculated rustication. The corners of the pier are recessed. This pier is situated to the south of Broad Ride, with a matching pier to the north at SP 0062 0229. It is believed that these piers originally supported gates between the Deer Park and Lodge Park and were relocated to their current positions when Broad Ride was extended eastwards to Cecily Hill after 1779.
