Description
The Round Tower at the National Grid Reference SO 9971 0253 and its attached wall are landscape buildings located in Cirencester. They date from the early to mid-18th century, with an early 19th-century addition. The structure is made of coursed squared limestone rubble with ashlar dressings. The roof of the tower is not visible, but there is an ashlar stack with an embattled top at the rear. The wing to the right features a stone slate roof with a hip to the left and an ashlar right-end stack, also with an embattled top.
The two-storey circular tower is designed in a neo-mediaeval style and has three unglazed lancet windows on the first floor, each surrounded by ashlar with small chamfers beneath hoodmoulds. The ground floor has two similar windows without hoodmoulds. The tower includes an ashlar plinth, a moulded string course above the first floor, a frieze, a scalloped cornice, and a coped parapet with mock arrow-slits in ashlar surrounds. The right wing has a single three-light timber window at the front and quoins at the right angle. A short section of screen wall with coping to the left conceals a projecting stair turret and the end of the lean-to at the rear from view on the front and left side. The interior has not been inspected.
