Description
Shawswell Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 17th century, with later extensions. It is constructed of limestone rubble and features a concrete tile roof with 20th-century ashlar stacks. The original range runs east-west at the center, with additional extensions to the north and south, creating a complex plan that now forms a basic rectangle.
The garden front has an asymmetrical gable at the center of the early range. It includes two and three-light casements, mostly with 20th-century lintels, in the early range and the right extension, while the left extension has stone-mullioned casements, one of which has double chamfers. There are also two 20th-century two-light roof dormers. The entrance features a 19th-century four-panel door, with the upper two panels now glazed, set within a gabled ashlar-built porch that has imposts and a keystone, located at the junction of the early range and the later southern extension. The farmhouse has gable-end stacks.
The interior has not been inspected but is said to contain open fireplaces with bressumer beams, including a kitchen fireplace with a curved bressumer and a small range, as well as a separate opening to a bread oven with a large dressed stone lintel to the right. The beams are noted to have deep flat chamfers.
