Description

The Old Rectory is a former rectory built in the early to mid-19th century. The south and west fronts are made of ashlar, while the rest of the building features coursed squared and dressed limestone. It has a stone slate roof with ashlar stacks and a basic rectangular plan, with an additional range at right angles at the rear. There is a 20th-century extension to the east that is not of special interest. The building has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar.

The entrance front is symmetrical with three windows, featuring 12-pane sash windows, one of which is blind. There is a band between the storeys and a parapet with a moulded cornice. The central entrance consists of a 6-panelled 19th-century door, with the upper two panels glazed, set within a flat-roofed porch that has a moulded cornice and a low parapet. The attic has two 2-light lead-roofed casements.

The symmetrical south front has a 1:3:1 window arrangement, also lit by 12-pane sashes, with a band between the floors and a parapet with a moulded cornice. It features a single 3-light lead-roofed dormer. The roofs are hipped with off-the-ridge stacks.

Inside, there is an open well staircase with stick balusters, decorative brackets on the risers, and a fluted newel post with shutters. A room to the left of the entrance contains a cast iron grate with geometric and floral designs, surrounded by hand-painted tiles depicting pastoral scenes. The wooden surround is painted and decorated with a Greek key pattern and egg and dart mouldings, along with a pulvinated frieze featuring bound oak leaf decoration. The property is owned by Rendcomb College.
