Description
The balustrading and walls to the terraces at Rendcomb College were built around 1866 and designed by P.C. Hardwick for Sir F.H. Goldsmid. The stone balustrading outlines a rectangular area immediately south of the entrance front. On the north side, the balustrading is set on an ashlar wall approximately 1.5 meters high and is connected to a lower balustrading by a moulded bracket that is decorated with fruit and flowers at the north-east corner, featuring a lion's head above the bracket. There are entrances towards the center of each side of the balustrading, which are flanked by stone urns with gadrooned bases and lions' heads where the handles would be. The urns by the southern entrance have been removed. Two straight ashlar walls retain terraces on the south side, and similar walls support a lower three-sided terrace. Urns are placed at intervals along the terrace retaining walls and at both the top and bottom of the flights of stone steps that connect the terraces.
