Description
Mill House is a former mill and miller's residence, dating back to the early 18th century for the mill and the 18th century for the house, with a 19th-century extension. The building is constructed from limestone rubble, featuring a red tile roof on the mill and concrete tiles on the outbuildings. The house has a slate roof combined with red tiles, while the 19th-century extension has both stone slate and red tile roofing. The mill has a rectangular plan, with the miller's house positioned at a right angle at the southeast corner, and an 'L'-shaped 19th-century extension added to the gable end of the house.
The mill stands three storeys tall, while the house is two storeys and the extension is one and a half storeys. The mill features an undershot design with a round-headed archway that has an off-centre keystone, garage doors to the left, and a 19th-century plank door with a segmental brick head to the right. This door is flanked by a four-pane light within a flat-chamfered surround and a 12-pane fixed casement with a timber lintel. There is also a blocked doorway with a timber lintel to the right of the 12-pane casement, and a two-light flat-chamfered stone-mullioned casement in the upper right corner. To the left, there is a four-light window with a timber lintel.
The 18th-century house features a single 16-pane sash window with a dressed stone surround on the ground floor, and three two-light casements with glazing bars and dressed stone lintels on the first floor. The gable of the 19th-century extension projects forward to the right, featuring a six-pane sash window with vertical glazing bars on the ground floor and gable. A panelled door with a glazed canopy on brackets is located to the right of the projecting gable, along with a six-pane sash window to the right of the door. The upper floor includes a two-light half-dormer and two six-pane casements on the gable end facing the road. The building has gable-end and lateral stacks.
Inside, the mill retains its machinery, including a cast iron mill wheel, gearing, shutes, and three mill stones, with the mill wheel protruding up through the first floor.
