Description

Holford and three unidentified monuments are located about 5 to 8 metres southeast of the porch in the churchyard of the Church of St. Lawrence. These four chest tombs are arranged in two pairs and date from the late 17th century to early 18th century. They are made of limestone.

The pair to the east features flat tops with moulded plinths and capping, both of which have been restored. The chest to the north has panelled corners adorned with an interlocking circle design and small bellied cartouches with carved surrounds at the ends. It also has large oval panels on the sides with flattened roll moulding and relief surrounds. The chest to the south has lyre ends with plain raised ovals, small rectangular side panels with shallow moulding, and flanking reliefs featuring a flattened scroll design and a twisted "rope" device.

The pair to the west is very similar and is likely associated with the Holford family. The chest for Thomas Holford has a flat top, while the chest to the south has a rounded top. Both have moulded plinths and capping, as well as lyre ends with acanthus returns and flat moulded small ovals. The sides of these chests have rectangular panels with two-tiered flat moulding and flanking panels of large interlocking circles, except for the north side of the chest to the south, which features acanthus scrolls.
