Description

Barton Abbotts is a large house dating to the 17th century, with a front facade remodelled in the late 18th century. It is situated on The Green in Barton Abbots. The house is constructed with incised render and has a Cotswold stone slate roof. There are two ashlar gable stacks to the front range, although the left-hand stack has been rebuilt. The main block is double in range, with a single range and a rear wing projecting on one side. It has three storeys and a moulded cornice and blocking course. The front has six windows with 12-pane sashes on the first and second floors. The ground floor has five similar, longer windows, and a stone porch to the right of centre, featuring two pilasters and two columns in Doric style with bases, a plain pediment, and a six-panel door. The rear facade is of coursed rubble, two storeys to the left, and a three-storey projecting wing to the right, adjoining East Barton, with which it forms a group. Stables were converted to houses in the late 20th century and are no longer considered to be of listable quality.
