Description
This is a pair of adjoining barns located approximately 50 meters northwest of Downs Farm Cottages. They were built in the late 18th century, with a later extension added. The barns are constructed from limestone rubble, featuring squared and dressed quoins, and are topped with stone slate and asbestos slate roofing.
The eastern barn, which dates from the 18th century, has a rectangular plan and includes a projecting porch on its southern side. The later extension is situated at the western gable end and also features a projecting porch on the south. There is a stable block at the eastern gable end, but it is not considered of special interest.
On the southern elevation, the early barn has a central gabled projecting porch with double plank doors and a relieving arch, while a similar porch is located towards the gable end of the later extension. The northern (roadside) elevation includes double doorways for both the early barn and the later extension, with stone slate lean-to canopies supported by brackets over the doorways, as well as ventilation slits. The extension has a hipped gable end. The interior of the barns is not accessible.
