Description
The dovecote located to the northwest of Ashcroft House is likely from the early to mid-19th century and may incorporate decorative stonework from an earlier structure. It is built of coursed rubble stone and features a stone slate roof that is swept and pitched in the center, sloping from back to front on each side. The dovecote consists of a single range with a slightly projecting two-storey central section and single-storey wings on either side.
The apex of the central gable has five rows of perch holes arranged in a triangular pattern, with small triangular-headed vents surrounding it, and a large vent in the center below a string course. There is a central pointed archway that likely contains the original shaped plank door, which has vertical battening arranged in a Y-shape. On each side of the archway are rectangular recesses with moulded stone sills, each featuring a small glazed pointed arch single light at the base, topped with a stone lintel that is masked by ashlar infill at the front, and a pointed relieving arch above. Flanking the central section are large segmental arched recesses, each containing two high single ogee-head plain glazed lights, with a central blocked slit vent surrounded by a cross-shaped surround.
