Description
Bagpath Court is a detached house dating to the late 17th century, with a date of 1697 inscribed on the entrance gate piers. The house was extended in the early to mid-19th century and altered in 1961. It is constructed of random coursed rubble stone with quoins on a moulded plinth. The roof is covered in stone slate, originally hipped to the south only, but now hipped at both ends, and features ashlar ridge and lateral stacks, all restored, along with a moulded cornice. The main range is two storeys and an attic, with a two-storey rear range that forms an L-shape to the northwest. The windows were probably originally stone mullioned and transomed, but were replaced in the 18th century with three 12-pane sashes to the first floor, and two to the ground floor. A plain continuous string course acts as a dripmould. A central stone doorcase features plain imposts, a raised keystone, a moulded cornice with a half-width broken pediment, and a door of six fielded panels. Three hipped dormers contain paired 6-pane casements. A string course continues on the left-hand return with one 12-pane sash to each floor, and a rainwater head dated 1961. The rear wing has restored paired casement windows.
The interior features a restored late 17th century staircase with twisted balusters, a moulded newel post leading to the attic, and a pulvinated moulded doorcase with frieze and cornice to the right of the stair on the first floor, although the left-hand end is concealed by a later partition wall. Some original beams remain, although the interior has been much altered. The cellar contains one stop-chamfered spine beam with run-out stops, and two 2-light stone mullion windows with stepped internal splays, located below the plinth on the main facade.
